WaterfallNow is a water features company launched in 2014 that specializes in both indoor and outdoor water features.
Waterfalls are a beautiful phenomena that many people find aesthetically pleasing. They help to calm the nerves and improve focus. We supply a range of custom built waterfalls from concept to completion. There are several different types of water features.
The water features that we build use a water pump that recirculates water back to the top so no water is wasted. LED Bubble walls are self contained and don’t actually lose water apart from evaporation over time.
One of the many advantages of artificial rocks or man-made rocks is that they can be made to can be made to any shape or size.
Where real rocks often come in random shapes and sizes, they are often not as easy to manipulate as artificial rocks despite a mason’s best efforts.
There are many different types of artificial rocks. The most popular being shotcrete, GFRC rock paneling, polyurethane foam, styrofoam, plastic, or fiberglass panels which is what WaterfallNow specializes in.
Natural stone can only stack so high and comes in limited supply depending on where one is located. It requires a lot of manpower as well as heavy machinery.
While we appreciate the beauty of natural rocks, we noticed over 30 years of landscaping, that many water features made with natural stone tend to operate for 2-3 years until they run into ongoing maintenance issues.
Artificial rocks can be designed as pondless waterfalls to reduce maintenance and maximize uptime.
Artificial rocks weigh less than natural rocks which can require heavy equipment and machinery to maneuver.
Fake rocks such as foam or fiberglass rocks can be lifted by a single person with ease.
Shotcrete rocks are sprayed on-site into a rebar structure and then carved. One of the major disadvantages with concrete is their tendency to crack.
It is often common for most swimming pool water features to be constructed using concrete.
This because most concrete contractors specialize in building swimming pools already.
This isn’t however to say that a swimming pool water feature is always best built with shotcrete.
There are instances where due to large size, it is better to use a hollow structure that is far more cost efficient and affordable.
Weight is not an issue with fiberglass rocks so a special permit is not required.
The creation of large overhangs is much more affordable and safer overall when using artificial rock (hollowed out) as opposed to natural stone which can crack, fall, and potentially crush whoever is underneath.
Artificial rocks can come in any number of colors. Special paints and coatings can be applied to create realistic rock surfaces that you cannot tell apart from real rocks.
Another advantage of artificial rocks is that you can change their color from one year to the next. Tired of brown? The contractor can simply paint over top to another desired color.
WaterfallNow uses a special compound that allows algae to form on the rocks which creates a more realistic appearance over time.
Fiberglass for example is an extremely durable material. When hardened it is pound for pound many times stronger than steel. It is very water resistant and not prone to cracking due to freeze-thaw action in freezing climates. It also lasts in hot climates.
When built to a commercial thickness, water features made using fiberglass can last for many decades without need of repairs.
Plumbing is protected and easily accessible with pondless waterfalls built using fiberglass. An access to the inner workings can always be made available. On the other hand, internal plumbing issues can be costly to remedy with shotcrete rocks should there be a hidden leak somewhere inside the structure. Once the concrete hardens, it is difficult and costly to repair.
You can put artificial rocks anywhere. They can even go in small doorways where natural rocks cannot pass through, rooftops where you can crane up the lightweight artificial rocks, in malls, amusement parks, theme parks, hotels, and anywhere else you can imagine would be suitable. They can be made to be hollow and used as covers for electrical or manholes.
Concrete rocks are recommended for walkways whereas fiberglass rocks are recommended for decorative elements such as to build the caves, overhangs, and rock walls. The versatility of fiberglass allows contractors to add in custom elements such as LED lighting and other features even after construction has finished. One can simply cut into the fiberglass, add the elements, and then re finish the area.
Artificial rock contractors can imitate natural rock patterns to add onto existing natural rock features. With a fiberglass molded rock, you essentially have a rock face that is identical to that of real rock. Shotcrete does not have this advantage and the rock texture is really up to the individual artist to carve out realistic patterns which is not always easy to do.
This is apparent on larger rockwork where one portion may look completely different from another and inconsistent as different workers have different levels of talent.
Sometimes, it is recommended to have a concrete contractor working with other contractors (polyurethane foam or fiberglass) where one focuses on the paving and the other focuses on creating the rock caves and walls.
There are advantages and disadvantages to both concrete and fiberglass but they balance eachother out when combined.
Special resins and paints are available to reduce the shine from fiberglass rocks.
There are definitely great instances of shotcrete used for decorative purposes. Many of the world’s most famous amusement park water features (Big Thunder Mountain @ Disney Land) were designed using shotcrete.
Real rocks would be financially unrealistic or impossible as a solution for most largescale projects. The biggest advantage of artificial rocks is their lower cost in comparison to real rocks.
For the same price you can expect a rock that is over 50% larger if you choose to go with artificial rock at a lower price. This is because there is less need for heavy machinery, labourers, and manpower.
Fiberglass is one of the most cost effective solutions that we currently offer and specialize in because of the competitive pricing and due to the fact that there are very few competitors. Nearly 90% of all of WaterfallNow’s work is made using a special fiberglass reinforced rock.
Cave rock or custom pool rock waterfalls always range in pricing and there is no real set standard pricing. It is up to the contractors experience, labour costs, material costs, time, overhead, and more to determine what they need to charge in order to make a profit.
Fortunately WaterfallNow has this all figured out and operates with small but highly skilled crews that works year-round. Our simple yet effective process allows us to cost 50% less than the next leading competitor for artificial rock projects.
Turn a boring landscape into something extraordinary with the addition of a custom artificial rock water feature. There are no limits to the possibilities and custom options. Except maybe your budget – Let’s be real here. Call WaterfallNow for your free estimate today.
Some photos to show you why most companies do not touch fiberglass. It is a VERY messy process to create the rock panels.
WaterfallNow’s designers have manufactured over 90% of the fiberglass rock panels used, locally, in Surrey, BC for many years. We can attest to the difficulty of the process and how damaging it can be on ones health. For this reason we do not employ entry level workers and prefer to do all of our manufacturing ourselves which is also a factor in our competitive pricing.
We purchase resin and fiberglass materials from China and manufacture our rock panels locally according to specific needs of our local clients. On any given day we can produce dozens of artificial rock panels. Each panel weighs less than 80lbs.
What Is Feng Shui And What Are Its Benefits With Water Features?
When it comes to feng shui tips for the placement of your water feature, it is helpful to understand the concept of feng shui. Feng shui is an ancient art and science developed more than three thousand years ago in China. Simply put, it revolves around balancing of energies in any given space to bring good health and fortune to the residing people. If you are wondering how it relates to your water feature, feng shui literally means wind and water. People living in stressful cities such as Vancouver can benefit greatly by adding a water feature to their home. But did you know there are places where you shouldn’t put a water feature? Read more to continue.
It is not necessary that the water feature has to look oriental to be used for feng shui. In fact, it is preferred that it works harmoniously with your interior or exterior décor. As aforementioned, water features are very popular in feng shui as they bring the energy of water into your home and water is a symbol of wealth and prosperity. The flowing water of the water feature helps reactivate life-force of the space, restores balance and produce beneficial yang energy. However, there are guidelines and rules to be followed in order to use water features for good feng shui. You should note here that improper placement of the water feature is considered to bring bad feng shui to your home.
If you are planning to install a water feature in your garden or your home for good feng shui, there are guidelines that could potentially improve the feng shui energy.
Desirable Locations of Water Features for Feng Shui
The location of any feng shui water feature should be determined by the Ba-Gua, a feng shui energy map. The fountain should be placed in the east direction for health and family, southeast for prosperity and abundance and north for career and path in life. The fountain should not be placed in the south area of the house, as according to feng shui ideology, south is associated with fame and reputation and its symbol is fire. When you bring water feng shui element into the fire feng shui element, it contradicts each other. Hence, you end up creating a bad feng shui or conflicting energy, as water puts down fire. In addition, when placing a water feature in your garden, it is preferable to have the water flow towards your house so that wealth and abundance flow towards your house and not away from it.
Type of Water Features for Feng Shui
You should consider how the feng shui elements are expressed in shapes and colors, so that it complements the water element and the needed feng shui in the given space is not overpowering. The shape, color and material of the water feature should express and support the needed feng shui. You should start by selecting the location of the water feature and then selecting the shape, color and material accordingly.
Undesirable Locations of Water Features for Feng Shui
Placing a feng shui water feature in your bedroom is considered bad feng shui. The location of your bedroom is irrelevant. The water feng shui element is believed to bring negative energy in form of worry into your bedroom. So, if you are considering a water feature for feng shui purpose, keep it out of your bedroom. Also, never place a water feature on either side of your front door as it produces negative energy.
You can enhance the feng shui positive energy by placing crystals or stones in your fountain, which strengthens the good energy. Using essential oils with your water feature that can diffuse them into the air can also augment the positive energy. In short, a feng shui water feature attracts good energy, prosperity and fortune, while creating a relaxing environment and adding style to your landscape or living room.
WaterfallNow was recently referred to construct multiple rock water features for this beautiful custom built home in West Vancouver at 1413 Sandhurst Place intersecting at Chartwell Drive in West Vancouver, BC, Canada.

BC Place: Water Features, Waterfalls, And Fountains In Vancouver
Temporary 12×18 pond setup using 2×6 lumber. Internally braced to provide more stability and security. A normal pond setup would be outdoors and dug into the ground. WaterfallNow typically employs pondless waterfalls which require very little water. The water splashes down into a hidden reservoir covered up by river rock and recirculates back up through a pump.
We were going to bring in some custom cherry wood benches made by new air custom designs but the deadline to ship things in was unfortunately passed. This particular display was crafted quickly on-site in a matter of hours. This type of project would normally have taken us several days with a large crew many years ago when we first began experimenting with fiberglass rocks
WaterfallNow has experience with concrete, natural rock, plastic rock, styrofoam rock, and even bricks. We have done it all and no other material captures the natural rock shapes found in nature as the ones we manufacture ourselves. Because the outer layer is composed of a mixture of natural rock, the rock can promote the growth of algae and within a few years resemble a real rock.
The thickness of the rock panels can be adjusted according to the purpose. In general, these rocks are meant to be used for display purposes and will last for many decades this way even operating in all 4 seasons.
The majority of the work that we do goes into crafting each rock panel specifically for the design we have in mind. There is a high cost involved in the production of the panels themselves. Anyone who has ever constructed fiberglass boats can attest to the high costs of fiberglass services and products. The equipment, skill, working conditions, and other associated costs may surprise those new to this industry but it is one the team at WaterfallNow is experienced in.

Featuring award winning pond waterfall and water garden designs by landscaping companies around the world
Thinking of renovating your yard this summer? WaterfallNow can bring any backyard water feature idea to life no matter what you have in mind. Here are some ideas for garden landscaping renovation projects using natural stone or concrete that home owners in Metro Vancouver have access to with contractors throughout the area.
This is a traditional style pondless water feature using the Aquascapes technology. It is a popular choice for many homeowners that are looking for a natural look and beautiful sound. It is also a popular choice for those wanting a Koi pond. Overall I would say that this is the most popular and recommended design. You can add a fountain, custom waterfall and even change the look simply by adding or rearranging the stones. Maintenance is only a hassle if you don’t have the budget to hire an experienced professional. If you like this design, call WaterfallNow and we will draw something up for you.
Here is one of my favourite videos from The Pond Digger a CAC with Aquascapes.
It is a rewarding feeling to have the skills and experience to do any project right the first time. Of course it will require many years of experience and the ability to properly quote a project before this can be achieved. When you consider how many variables there are when offering full-service landscaping it is no wonder most businesses struggle in their beginning stages. I personally believe that specializing in one thing and doing it better than anyone else is the best decision you can make from a business building perspective.
A cool contemporary design created with concrete rock (GFRC). A great idea for a koi pond. You can see the pond is properly constructed as it is not so small that it can’t sustain itself. Larger ponds require less maintenance because they develop a natural balanced ecosystem within.
Somewhat hard to see but this is a small project made in the front yard of a home in Surrey. As you may know, WaterfallNow often uses an artificial rock compound panel that is very durable and looks like the real thing. This is used when the client wants a large rock that looks like one large piece. It is difficult or even impossible even using modern machinery to create something similar so we build it from scratch, piece by piece. LED lighting is just an additional tool that can be used to create a certain effect.
Faux rock panels are what make larger resort-style waterfalls and water features possible. WaterfallNow has made a countless number of smaller projects using this method and has the ability to create larger ones as well depending on the clients budget. We can work out a design that suits your needs for larger projects in any height, width, or design. The colour and lighting add-ons can also closely match whatever you have in mind.
Book your complimentary design consultation with a landscaping contractor in Vancouver or your local market today and start brainstorming some ideas. While word of mouth is great for the contractor, you as the home-owner should get at least 3 different quotes from different contractors to get the best value, service, ideas, and designs. The garden is after all your private sanctuary so you want to get it made right the first time.

Pond Waterfall And Water Garden Designs: Vancouver Edition September 24th, 2014WaterfallNow
Do you feel the need to spend more time outdoors? In just a month or two from now, the weather should be hitting high 30’s. Wouldn’t it be nice to have a water feature in your backyard that you can enjoy in the early mornings or evenings when you are back from work? After scouring the web in search of the perfect water features for the garden, our customers came across WaterfallNow. They now love to invite friends over for barbeques, drinks, and sitting out in the evenings by their beautiful water features.
Many people are starting to look for the best ways to decorate their gardens for the summer of 2014, which is ‘likely’ to be the hottest on record – at least in the UK. But let’s just pretend it will also be the same case in BC, Canada just so that I don’t have to figure out the El Nino patterns and other weather related information. If you feel the need to educate me please do.
Here are some ideas of water features for the garden ideas that you can implement this summer.
1. Drop by the nearest pond and water garden nursery in your area. Once at the store you can browse determine the types of flowers, plants, and designs that you like best. If you are unsure of what plants to buy, ask the staff if they can assist you. Certain plants thrive better in the shade or in damp areas. These are the types of plants that you would want to incorporate into your water garden. Man-made water features look great when combined with the right plants. The plants add greenery and help to provide a more realistic looking water feature as you would find in nature.
2. Do you want a pond? Ponds are undoubtedly beautiful but only if maintained. They can require a lot of manual labour from taking the rocks out, cleaning the basin, putting the rocks back in, so on so forth. Without this maintenance the pond will eventually turn into green pea soup which I’ve seen a lot of. How deep do you want the pond to go? Before you dig, call http://www.bconecall.bc.ca/. It is free to call. Don’t do any digging without calling to avoid causing damage to any pipelines, telecommunication cables, sewage lines, and electrical wires.
Back in our landscaping days we used to get calls to do maintenance on ponds – something that we often didn’t look forward to. You may be familiar with a TV show called dirty jobs. That’s what cleaning these ponds resembled. It was a dirty, disease ridden mess. Eventually some of them called us in after they’d had enough maintaining the ponds and asked us to fill the pond with dirt and lay fresh turf over top. Problem solved. The racoons on the other hand weren’t as happy because there was no longer any fish to eat.
Some people don’t realize that having a pond requires continual maintenance. (Slap my head). It DOES. But, some people actually enjoy working on their ponds on a daily basis. If not, then a pond might not be your best choice.
All ponds require some level of maintenance. When you are looking to care for koi fish you must keep the water clean otherwise the fish will develop diseases and die. Using a variety of water plants such as water lilies or water cress can help to naturally clean the water. There are different schools of thought on whether or not you should have a gravel or dirt bed. I prefer to go without the gravel basin. If you are going to make a pond, don’t make a small pond because the fish will grow. It is also an addicting hobby and you may wish you had a bigger pond.
If you already have a pond then you probably have a grasp by now of how they need constant cleaning. We prefer the pondless or invisible waterfall water feature designs to minimize maintenance and maximize the time spent enjoying the project. Ponds are undoubtedly an excellent addition but unkempt ponds harbour diseases, mosquitoes, and are unattractive. Make sure you know what you are getting into.
20 Questions To Ask Yourself Before You Build a Koi Pond – Watch this very informative video
3. Decide on how much space you have to allocate to a water feature for your garden. For smaller gardens, focus on height to maximize horizontal space. WaterfallNow is fairly good at doing this as our lightweight artificial rock panels can be stacked to any height. Natural rocks typically require more horizontal space to achieve the desired cascading effects of mini waterfalls.
4. Pondless features are gaining in popularity. WaterfallNow’s pondless water feature system means that you can run these rock fountains in all 4 seasons with no maintenance. Just add water and let it run. To clean our rocks simply spray them with a pressure washer. You can even change the colour of the rocks from one year to the next using a special paint. They can be set to run on a timer or set up to a remote control switch. This would allows you to switch on the rock waterfall sitting in your backyard at night from inside your home.
These look spectacular at night when the floodlights are shining on them. The occasional sweeping of leaves and other debris that might otherwise clog the water pump and ensuring that the water level does not get too low is the majority of the maintenance requirements. Should you decide to not run the waterfall in the winter we advise to drain the water basin, disconnect the water pump, give it a rinse, and store it indoors to prevent cracking or damage to the internal parts from freeze-thaw. They can be set up again simply by connecting the water pump back to the hose, adding water to the mini pond and turning the water feature back on.
The majority of WaterfallNow’s rock fountains are pondless meaning the size of the pond is built to hold just enough water for the water feature to operate.
Add a faux rock water feature to your backyard for stunning results
5. Determine the type of sound that you want to achieve. Taller water features often produce more of the crashing sounds of water. The amount of water pressure or the size of the pump used plays a significant role in the sounds. There are low-sound water pumps that can reduce sound coming directly from the pumps motor. If you prefer a smaller trickling sound consider a cascading waterfall feature. The horizontal movement of water followed by small overhangs produces very relaxing sounds. WaterfallNow can adjust all of these sounds by adjusting the angle and speed of water flow.
6. Do you want something permanent or moveable? This is one of the decisions that one must make when working with concrete which is permanent. WaterfallNow used to use concrete until we realized how little our customers could use their water features. The damage from weathering over the years meant multiple leaks and cracks which can cost a lot of money to constantly repair. But that was back in the day. GFRC concrete employed today is much more durable. WaterfallNow no longer employs concrete but uses fibreglass instead. It can be as strong as steel while remaining flexible enough to avoid cracking. Should something crack we can easily repair it. Sometimes our customers will call us a year later to come and add another section to their rock waterfall. Other times our customers will sell their home and call us to help them move the rock fountain to their new home. It is all about your personal preference. WaterfallNow caters to a wide-variety of requests.
7. What kind of lighting do you want to use? Many of our customers enjoy the backyard paradises that we’ve created for them. Some of the pool waterfalls which we don’t have any pictures of look amazing at night. The white floodlights shine on the waterfall spillway while purple, blue, and green lights all create a unique ambiance. We are very proud of some of the projects that we’ve created because of how happy our customers are. It is only a matter of time until more people can experience the joy of enjoying their own backyard paradise with a water feature built the way they had in mind.

Water Features For The Garden – Just Add Water
Water Features For The Garden June 26th, 2014WaterfallNow
The thousands of KM’s added onto my ride in the past week just from all the short drives throughout the Lower Mainland was a real wake up call. Perhaps it is time to switch to an electric car… Then again, 11MPG was never good to begin with! Back to the point though, I did notice a lot of nice houses being built all over Surrey. By nice I mean massive with 5 car garages and sheds the size of what I used to consider a big size home.
And yes it was slightly embarrassing at first to knock on the door of a shed that nobody lives in and then hear the owner laughing from his window from the main home 3 stories high probably thinking what an idiot I am thinking people live in the shed. The point is, these are some big houses.
While we get many referrals please do me one favor and don’t put a dog house just beside the front door and where you don’t notice it until you see the pearly whites. I still can’t help but get out of the car while driving sometimes and putting doorhangers up. Making rock features can be addictive and I am on rehab from that addiction. My partners now do the artwork and create that blueprint in your glorious head.
I’ve been through half of the neighborhoods in West Vancouver and can say that some of the homes being built south of Surrey are coming to par. There is still much room for improvement. While many of the newer homes being build in Surrey look impressive in size, many are nothing more than a larger cookie cutter. Hopefully we will see more unique architecture like what you can find in Shaughnessy, Vancouver, BC.
Architecture does hold importance to me because it means that some people out there are still striving for the best and to do what hasn’t yet been done. They know that the best designs, ideas, and projects have not even been created. This is inspiring. That is why I appreciate seeing something unique that showcases some of the designers creativity. Don’t take this to mean that uniqueness in itself is a virtue. The finished product has to look good to most people and be a 10 on the wow factor.
Holy Cow…. What happened here? Public washroom?
If you haven’t heard already, Surrey will be the new Vancouver. The population of Surrey is expected to surpass that of Vancouver in 5-10 years. Just in time for 2020. The new city hall erected in Surrey which they spent $97 million dollars on (caused some controversy) reflects the vision that the leaders have for this city. It is an exciting time for people living in East of the bridge(s).
“Successful Official Grand Opening Of Aria Banquet And Convention Centre Saturday June 21, 2014” – The Mayor of the City of Surrey gave it high praise stating that it is the best she has seen in over 18 years of visiting different banquet halls and convention centres in BC. Read More: http://waterfallnow.com/tag/aria-banquet-hall-and-convention-centre/
The Surrey that I’ve come back to in the past few years was not like the Surrey I remembered half a decade prior and I’m sure that change will be exponential moving forward. I’m sure there will be some issues with overpopulation
While Surrey and White Rock are without the natural landscapes, forests, cliffsides, and creeks that are present in many homes in West Vancouver (natural rock formations take millions of years to become that way), it has many acres of flat agricultural land. That’s fine because I like blueberries. Too much land to even know I was there :D. Just kidding. Stealing is bad.
So basically, much of this land is being quickly bought up and new houses are going up all over the place. I have no idea just how big of a change we will see in the next 5 to 10 years in Surrey’s development but it will be a sight to behold.
WaterfallNow has plenty of customers to pick from. What we really want is to start doing something different each time. We don’t want to get to a point where we stop pushing the limits. I believe that someone in the Lower Mainland has the most amazing blueprint in their mind right now and just doesn’t realize it yet. Come share your crazy ideas with us.
I’ve toured some of the most expensive homes in BC and sadly, many of them did not have a water feature or had one but stopped paying for the maintenance. WaterfallNow’s rock fountains, waterfalls, and water features can be designed in such a way that they require no maintenance, recycle rainwater, and can run on low energy consumption setting with an autostop timer for even further benefit.
Then again, custom water features aren’t cheap. They are expensive, a luxury item, and that is the point right? Well, yes and no. WaterfallNow hopes to strike a balance between the two extremes of luxury vs cheap. We aren’t that cheap and we aren’t that luxurious. We are somewhere in the middle at least for now. Why do we have such low pricing? Well, it is because we hate turning people away.
