Need indoor water feature ideas? Houzz and Pinterest are a popular destination for many interior designers, builders, homeowners, and architects looking for inspiration and ideas for their custom water wall project. Custom water walls range in price anywhere from $20,000-$100,000 or more per project depending on the amount of work that goes into the design and build. It is not recommended to compromise and go for the cheapest options as these features are prone to malfunction if improperly constructed.
Some basic things to keep in mind for a custom water wall include:
Adjustable water flow valve
Easy access to pumps
Submersible pumps are often not recommended
Separate mechanical room for pumps and electrical
Even flow water dispersion (We don’t recommend PVC pipe with holes due to calcium build up)
Investing in a good design and quality materials
Colors that match the rest of the surrounding decor/furniture/design/colors.
If you are looking for a commercial water feature it is recommended to get multiple quotes. Because every project is different, certain companies might be better suited for that particular project than another. Doing this gives you more leverage than you would have negotiating with a single provider (always good to do). Doing so may also help you discover the actual contractor performing the work so you can cut out the middle man.
The idea of adding a water feature to your garden space can be exciting and thrilling. Once you have decided on the type of water feature, you can barely wait to start and finish the construction of the water feature so that you can enjoy it. But, there are factors to consider if you really want a pinnacle of natural beauty and style in your garden. A water feature appearing out of place or being too big or too small in the space can reduce the appeal of the feature. When choosing and planning your water feature, you should make sure that it fits or complement the composition of your garden. Perhaps, you can use the same materials that are featured elsewhere in the garden design. You should consider the ability of the material to hold water before selecting the material for your water feature.
Water Containing Ability
Waterproof masonry, such as concrete, is ideal for water features as it seal in the water, whether it is a raised or sunken pool. If you are choosing a material with joints, such a brick or rocks, they will leak so you should add a specialized render to the interior of the pond. You can choose colored or clad with tiles or a waterproof membrane such as PVC. Don’t add my decoration, made of material, which can puncture or damage the waterproof liner. In addition, the joints where pipes enter the pool should be watertight. You can line the edge of a pond liner with flat stones will protect it, but it needs to be smooth-edged to prevent punctures.
Types of Water Feature Material
Natural stone has been used for hundreds of years to build water features, especially fountains. And when it comes to natural look, nothing beats it. You can use sandstone or marble, which are available in variety of colors and patterns. Sandstone water features come in amazing shades and is cheaper than marble or granite. The most attractive aspect of stone is that it is entirely natural and blends well with outdoor environment. It can withstand the effects of elements – wind, sunshine and rain.
Granite is a very strong and natural material which can have a lifespan of over a decade, even when it is constantly exposed to the elements. It makes granite a great material for water features. It comes in different shades, can be polished to achieve a smooth finish and can be carved to add shapes and texture. But, if you are on a budget, it may not suit you as it comes with a high price tag.
Bamboo is a cheaper natural material than stones and other material and goes well in Oriental style gardens. Bamboo is, generally, used in conjunction with popular Buddha water features. It has a long lifespan and is a durable option.
If your garden is old-fashioned or you wish to maintain the natural look, a wooden water feature could be an excellent choice. The only drawback is that wood needs to be treated to prevent rotting and warping from continuous water exposure. It needs to be seal, varnish or treated regularly to maintain its condition.
Copper add amazing color and shine to your garden. You can match it to complement the existing color scheme in your garden. As long as you use a high quality copper, it can resist water erosion and wont rust. It can be molded into interesting and unique shapes.
Stainless steel can last for decades, provided it is of good quality and is relatively thick. Grade 304 steel is most suitable for water features, but can be expensive. Steel, like copper, can be molded into interesting designs and can be provided a smooth or rough texture finish.
When selecting the material for your water feature, you should consider the size of your garden, its intended purpose, what is the existing landscape style, is it safe and whether it is within your budget. If the material does not work well with the garden or blend in it, you might not get the desired result.

These high-quality spillways are worth every penny, and look AMAZING, whether embedded in a wall, or right out in the open. We installed one at each end of a 1500 gallon L-shaped koi pond. The water flows SO smoothly and evenly over these spillways… simply flawless. The sound level they produce is just right. I love everything about these, and glad we made the investment. The seller was extremely helpful when I asked installation questions, and very quick to respond. That is added value that goes a long way!
Long term addition to my pond that I love!July 22 2014

Fantastic add to my pond. The fact that it is stainless means I can leave it out all year. Spillway is smooth and nice! Once every few weeks I doo need to wipe it down as algae residue can build up (even though I have a filtration system) – but that is not caused by the spillway and cleanup is a snap.

The only spillway I will use for my customers. Excellent design, very well made, and high quality materials make this a must have for all of our waterfalls
The landscape is usually one of the most important aspects of a home renovation project. This is because it is usually one of the first things that people will notice. In landscape architecture and garden design, a water feature may include one or multiple items ranging from ponds, to pools, fountains, waterfalls and streams. Water features have been around for many centuries. The Hanging Gardens of Babylon (1 of the 7 wonders of the world located in Mahaweel, Iraq) is an example of one of the most famous landscapes of all times – not that you need to start building one in your house!
Water features are more than just aesthetics; the sounds of running water soothes your mind and soul. Studies have shown that the sound of running water subconsciously slows down your breathing, which in turn lowers your blood pressure and heart rate. Furthermore, water reduces your stress levels. When you come home from a hectic and stressful day, having a glass of wine while sitting near a water feature can help you to unwind. Five minutes of time spent by the sounds of flowing water can help reduce stress hormones. Who knows, this could end up saving your life down the road.
In addition to relieving of stress, there are other benefits to installing a water feature within your landscape design. Here are five reasons to add a water feature to your garden.
Anyone that has owned a water feature in the past knows that they attract wildlife – but not the dangerous type. Flowing water attracts birds, rabbits, squirrels and other adorable animals. There is nothing like waking up to the sounds of singing birds. Crows on the other hand don’t sound as good but you take the good with the bad sometimes. Anyways, if you are a nature lover, your water feature will become the most important aspect of your garden and where you will find yourself spending most of your time. You can enjoy nature without having to leave the comfort of your own backyard. Of course if you live in Vancouver you only need to take a stroll down to Stanley Park to visit one of the most beautiful wilderness parks in the world.
A well designed water feature adds a lot of curb appeal to your home. If you want the most beautiful landscape and be the envy of the neighborhood, plan on adding a water feature to your garden. There are different types of water features for different homes. Contemporary home designs will look better with clean water walls, waterfall spillways, laminar water jets, flat concrete walls, and sleek looking statue fountains. Luxury homes looking to design a resort-like setting in their backyard almost always have a pool with an artificial rock waterfall, cave, grotto, bbq pit, and outdoor kitchen. Having a staycation can be just as fun as going on a vacation without the hassle of airports and jet lag.
Water Features Increase A Homes Value
Homes featuring water features have been known to have higher property values than those with little or no landscape design. This is important in the event you ever want to sell your home. When you add a well designed and aesthetically appealing water feature to your property, the value increases instantly and your home becomes more attractive to potential buyers, giving your property a competitive property market. Well designed water features will operate in most seasons without ongoing maintenance costs. Like pools, a poorly designed water feature that requires constant maintenance may actually deter some people from investing in the home. One important factor to consider is whether or not the materials used to make the water feature will withstand cracking from freeze-thaw action. This is especially important in Vancouver which gets much rain, rust, and freezing temperatures in the winters.
Drown Out Noise Pollution
A fountain or a waterfall diminishes the noise pollution in your surroundings. Noise machines commonly use ocean waves, the sounds of falling water, and river noises, and there is a reason for that. Sounds of water are soothing and block out annoying noises like traffic or construction. Does your neighbor talk too loud? Are you are tired of hearing them talk about how bad their day was. Is your house is situated next to a busy street or the passing by cars have high music on? You can suppress those undesirable noises by adding a water feature with enough white noise to solve the problem. In addition, you have unlimited access to a peaceful area to enjoy the outdoors.
Flowing water releases negative ions. These negative ions are tasteless, odorless and invisible molecules that we inhale. Water features such as water walls, waterfall spillways, and cascading waterfalls help toimprove air quality, which is obviously better for your health. Negative ions have mood bosting and stress relieving effects on humans. Maybe even on your pets as well. Falling water also acts as a filter for dust, pollen, and even collects animal hairs floating in the air. This is a beneficial feature to those suffering from asthma or allergies. Just make sure to clean out the water once in a while.
Think back to the feeling of peace and tranquility when going to beaches, lakes or rivers. You can add a little of that to your life by adding a water feature in your garden. A garden water feature can be heard from inside your home through your bedroom window or beside your office desk if you have an indoor waterfall.
It is recommended to opt for a professional landscape designer to install the water feature, so that it is done right the first time. A landscape designer can install your water feature at the most suitable location so that it feels like a natural extension of your landscape. Depending on your needs, your landscaper can also recommend the best low maintenance system to install or custom design a unique water feature that has never been done before. Even if you don’t consider yourself to be the creative type, working directly with the artist him/herself means that you helped design and build the water feature.

5 Reasons To Add A Water Feature To Your Landscape February 4th, 2015WaterfallNow
This is the type of waterfall that WaterfallNow is known for specializing in. There are different materials ranging from natural stone, veneer panels, boulders, concrete, brick, fiberglass, gfrc and even styrofoam. WaterfallNow prefers fiberglass over the alternatives due to the lightweight and flexible nature of the rock. As it is molded off of real rocks, the rocks maintain the same textures that natural rocks would. The rocks can be painted to any color and even painted again to change the color for a different season. Rock waterfalls with natural stone are usually seen in everyday landscaping gardens whereas artificial rock waterfalls are seen around tropical pool resort-like environments. Note: When retrofitting a waterfall onto an existing pool, it is important to note that the weight of concrete or other materials can cause damage such as cracking if not careful. Fiberglass rocks are a safer and more cost-effective alternative.
This kind of feature is where water slowly trickles or cascades down from the top of the wall. The water is fed back up from a pump and tube to the top and this process continues. Note that most water walls require a filter to be installed to avoid clogging from mineral build up. These are an elegant water feature idea that can go both indoors and outdoors. There are different sounds of cascading water depending on the type of material used for the front panel. These are increasing in popularity especially in corporate settings. Many companies are opting to have an acrylic or glass water wall with their logo engraved. The addition of LED lighting makes for a truly spectacular piece of decor.
Rain curtains are a great design piece to add moving water to a room. These can be built both indoors or outdoors. Indoor units are typically made with thin clear strands that run from the top of the unit to the water channels where the water is then fed back up through a pump to fall back down again in a continuous motion. There are many excellent photos of rain curtains that can be found online. These pieces can be customized in virtually any design. Speak to your local water features experts to learn about some of the possibilities.
Scupper / Waterfall Spillway / Sheer Descent / Ledge Fall / Sheet Fall
Scuppers are water features where water flows down a small ledge before descending into a pool, pond, or water container. There are many variations and names as well as materials (aluminum, acrylic, plastic, fiberglass). These produce more sound than a rain curtain or water wall and are a spectacular at night with the addition of LED strip lights built into the spillways. Waterfall spillways and sheet falls are similar in that they are thin flattened flows of water coming down in a long line the width of the spillway unit.
These are similar to a water jet however there are different types of flows. These units are typically wall-mounted to the side of a pool wall or retaining wall and has water shooting out in a thin line or flowing down. One common version of a sconce water feature is a lions head with water flowing from the mouth.
These are a water feature with increasing DIY (do it yourself) popularity. Many high end laminar jets that are programmable can go for more than $2000 USD per unit. WaterfallNow carries some custom made stationary units for customers that simply want a unit that flows in a straight line into a pool without any special controlling requirements. These laminar flows create the impression of a solid LED lighted tube. At night you will see the LED lighting flowing through the tube cast light into the area where the water meets the pool. A definite must-have for nighttime pool enthusiasts.
Bubbler / Gurgler
These are often sold in landscape supply stores or custom-made by water features specialists. They are water features with a pump that channels water through and out the top of hollow cored out faux or real rocks. The more common material used is basalt rock. These can weigh thousands of pounds or can be made light enough for a single person to carry depending on the materials used.
There are an infinite number of fountain variations. WaterfallNow can make customized programmable fountain units with aluminum and other materials for Vegas Bellagio style light shows. These water features shoot water up out of the pond, pool, or basin and fall back onto themselves or at an angle. They come in an infinite variety of designs and styles.
Have fun designing your next water feature project!

Today we will take a look at a few luxury pool water features commonly used in many backyard design projects. Keep in mind that many luxury pool contractors rates will typically range between $100,000 and $500,000.
The biggest economic crisis in modern history saw many great pool contractors throughout North America moving onto other things. Sadly, this opened the door for many inexperienced builders to build so-called luxury pools.
The amount of fine attention to detail that goes into building a custom pool to a high standard may go unnoticed to the average person but are easily detected by experienced pool builders.
As always, you want to ensure that you are hiring someone that is capable of carrying out a project. Don’t just take the contractors word for it. If possible, check their references. While it isn’t a foolproof way of avoiding problems later on, it does eliminate a lot of doubts.

Custom Rock Waterfalls
High quality pools deserve quality water features. A common water feature for nature infused backyards is a custom rock waterfall. These are a staple in amusement parks around the world and for good reason. They look great, produce soothing sounds, and can transform a cold and boring yard into a warm and welcoming atmosphere.
Rock water features are made in a variety of different ways.
1. Artificial GFRC Panels Tied To An Internal Steel Frame
One method utilizes an internal bracing system with concrete GFRC panels tied on making the inside hollow. A concrete mud is used to seal the joints. One company that comes to mind is Neptune Panels which is a distributor in the USA. While strong, the concrete/fiber panels will still split down the middle if struck hard enough with a hammer. Rock molds for this method are often flat surfaced making this the easiest method to scale for fast projects.
Modern Pool by Manchester Stone, Pavers & Concrete Neptune Panels
2. Shotcrete And Hand-Carved Artificial Rock
Another method of creating rock waterfalls for pools is through the use of concrete forming and shotcrete. This method often costs the most simply due to the amount of preparation, labourers, and materials used not to mention the ongoing maintenance to repair cracks, chips, and leaks commonly caused during the winter. This is the most common method of creating artificial rock water features simply because concrete pool contractors already deal with shotcrete. It does have the potential to look very nice in the hands of expert artisans.
One method of creating a lightweight, cost-effective, and easily customizable custom rock waterfall or fountain is by using a blend of fiberglass and natural materials. This method is the least common for creating rock water features. WaterfallNow adopted this method simply because nobody else was doing it. The thickness can be adjusted depending on the application.
While similar to the GFRC panel method, this method is different due to the rock texture which is a clone of the original rock face capturing deep grooves, and edges of real cliffsides. Attempting to recreate these patterns carved out of concrete would produce less than appealing results.
Although it requires much more cutting, bending, shaping, and many hours of practice to get right, we find that it has the most potential. The cost can be 20-50% less than the other methods.
This gives you two options. Firstly you can expect a cost of 20-50% less than what you would normally pay. Secondly, you can spend the same amount yet get much more bang for your buck. An example would be the option to choose additional lighting, spillways, or a larger sized rock.
Does your backyard look more like a jungle than a townhouse complex? If so, a custom rock waterfall just might be your next big project. The sooner you start planning, the sooner you can enjoy spending time in your private oasis.

Laminar Water Jet Fountain
Laminar water jets are a commonly used water feature for modern pool designs. Some models can be programmed to change colors and turn on and off at different intervals creating a mini water show.

While these images do not properly show their effects, when a laminar water jet with LED lighting penetrates the pool surface, it also lights up the pool area with the same color of LED light used. A blue LED laminar jet would light up the pool surface and cast a blue glow. These water features can be used in conjunction with custom rock waterfalls or for clean modern pool designs as shown in the previous image above.
Sheer Descent Waterfall Spillways and Weirs
There are several types of spillways that go well with luxury pools
Natural slate stone pieces combined with natural rock are sometimes used as well
The more common black plastic waterfall pond kits are not common with luxury backyard pool designs.
There are hundreds of different designs and even infinite possibilities if you contract a custom stainless steel fabricator.
One of the most important things to include is a high quality LED light strip. Ask any landscape designer what is the one easiest thing you can do to drastically improve the look and feel of a yard and they might mention lighting. At least from our own personal experience, proper lighting (underwater lights even) can make the biggest difference.
The following image is an example of what a waterfall sheer might look like. It does not appear to have any LED lighting installed near the outlet however you can see the use of an anti-splash mat where the rocks hit the base.
