How to Choose the Right Water Feature for Your Garden

If you are looking to improve the appeal and environment of your garden, you should consider adding in one or more water features. You may already have planted flowering plants, ornamental plants and other types of plants, but you can give your garden a focal point and a dramatic touch to your garden by adding water features. There is a large variety of water features you can consider for your garden – fountains, ponds, pools, waterfalls, streams and cascades. They come in different sizes and designs and you need to choose one according to your existing garden.

There are considerations for choosing a water feature that suits your garden and your preference.

Available Space

Determining the availability of space is the first thing you need to do when choosing a water feature. Different water features comes in various sizes and you need a water feature that is neither too big nor too small for your garden. A large fountain cannot be fitted in a restricted space. You don’t need your water feature to take up most of the space and appear out of proportion. Ensure that you have enough space to move around the garden once the water feature is installed or your garden does not looked congested.

Ground Condition

You need to choose a water feature that can be supported by the soil of the garden. Some gardens have hilly ground while others are flat. Your soil can be soft or hard rock. In any case, you should choose a type of water feature that is workable for your ground condition. Water features for hilly areas can be different from flat surface. For instance, you can create a waterfall on a hilly area and install a typical fountain on a flat one. In case your garden is hilly and you have your heart set on a water feature suitable for flat area, you can always flatten and level your ground.

Adding Plants & Fishes

Not every water feature can be mixed and matched with plants, so if you want to add plants to your water feature, you should choose accordingly. You need to have a water feature with still water to have plants in them. Moreover, the location of the water feature should be such that sunlight can reach the plants. Similarly, if you love fishes and want to add them to your water feature, you need to choose a water feature that can support an aquatic life. Fishes can be placed in flowing water so that they get more oxygen. Also, you need to decide what types of fishes you want so you can choose a water feature accordingly.

Know the Purpose

Different people add water features for different reasons. You may be adding it to increase the beauty of your home. Or you want to extend the collection of your plants and fishes. Hence, you need to choose a water feature that can satisfy your purpose successfully.

Preference of Water Feature Type

There are a wide variety of water features that you can choose from and you might have a preference for water feature type. There are small ones and really huge ones, free standing water feature or a moving one. You should take into account what type of water feature you want for your garden. You can also choose if you want it to be formal, rocky, zen or tropical.

Have a Budget

Installing a water feature requires an investment, but the amount of investment depends mainly on the type and style of the water feature. Hence, you need to create a budget or you might end up spending more than intended. Setting a budget can narrow your choices to ones you can afford. The expenses you should consider are materials, labors and overheads.

Once you have considered these factors, you can shortlist the water features suitable for you and then choose. A water feature can create a sense of serenity and peace in your garden as well as increase its aesthetic appeal.

We’ve built many water features for private residences throughout the Lower Mainland, Vancouver, BC working with custom home builders and homeowners.

Water Walls Vancouver

To maintain our water walls (this one made in Vancouver) simply use a brush to scrub any algae from the water basin and then pump out the water. This can be done just a few times each year to keep things looking clean. WaterfallNow does not recommend using chemical treatments as the water basin can be kept clean naturally.

We install remote control settings for our clients so they can turn their waterfalls water and lighting on or off with a remote from inside their home. Our waterfalls and water walls can operate in all 4 seasons. As long as the pump is free of debris and the water basin does not freeze the pump can continually run without issue. We recommend installing autofillers or filters for most projects however this is a cost the client can determine whether or not they wish to include. Sometimes they are not necessary but generally help make the water features run much more efficiently when included into the projects. Our waterfalls look exceptional with icicles hanging off the water feature and LED/floodlights shining on them at night.

LED light strips under ordinary circumstances may last 11 years when used 12 hours a day. If outdoors the life of the LED may vary significantly depending on the conditions. Like all other parts of the water wall they can be replaced in very little time. Our rocks are versatile and we are also able to create indoor waterfalls without leaving a huge mess. The same goes for outdoor projects where we can leave virtually no damage to the surrounding landscape.

Any cosmetic damage to the rock is hardly noticeable and can be fixed in a jiffy. Want a different colour rock? WaterfallNow has a wide variety of concrete rock sprays to match any rock to your home.
