How To Build a Pondless Waterfall For The Garden

How to Build Your Very Own Pondless Waterfall

Waterfalls are, undoubtedly, everyone’s favorite water feature in a garden. You can add waterfalls to your ponds and pools, but that’s not the only option. Stand-alone waterfall, known as pondless waterfall, can be an excellent water feature all on its own. It brings the sound and sight of flowing water into your property, without the maintenance needed with a pond. Pondless waterfalls require lower maintenance than any other type of water feature.

Whether you are a backyard warrior looking to tackle your own renovation project or a landscaping contractor specializing in aquascapes, this article is for you.

Complete System: Working, Space & Maintenance

In simple words, a pondless waterfall is a stream or waterfall that falls into and disappears in a bed of river rock. The water is collected in a small basin hidden behind the rocks and transported back to the top through a hose. It is fitted with a pump which sits on the bottom away from the view. As the water level never pools, it appears that there is no pond, when in fact the pond is simply not visible. You can set the speed of the waterfall as per your desire. Pondless waterfalls are a perfect solution if you have restricted space in the yard or you have safety concerns with a pond such as infants.

Pondless waterfalls can be accommodated into a small area, so even if you have a small backyard, limited space or you just want a small, compact water feature to enjoy, pondless waterfall is your solution. It is very easy to take care and maintain a pondless waterfall. All you need to do is to fill up the reservoir every few weeks to make up for the water loss due to evaporation, and you are done.

Steps to Building a Pondless Waterfall

Step # 1

Finding a suitable location is the first and foremost step in the construction of the waterfall. Ideally, pick an elevated area as the natural drop means you won’t have to create an artificial slope (work with what you have). If there is no slope, you can do some digging to create the slope so gravity will take care of the flow of water. You want to pick an area with little debris and falling leaves. Maintaining aquascape style pondless waterfalls e.g. matrix box, pump, and skimmer can be difficult to clean and properly maintain. It is sad to see many of these types of waterfalls inoperational within a few months to a year because they are difficult to clean (matrix box and pump hidden underneath the rocks). You could opt for a more vertical waterfall made using artificial rock e.g. fiberglass, conrete, shotcrete, or other material that can be easier to maintain.

Step # 2

Plan and mark a rough outline, keeping in mind that after adding layers of fabric and liner, you will lose a lot of definition from your path. It is wise to make the wall of your water flow overly exaggerated. Ensure that the pit you build is large enough to hold the volume of water needed. If you don’t estimate enough water, your pondless waterfall may run out of water too soon. This is especially true in hot weather conditions where water will evaporate quickly. A dried out water basin can cut years off from your pumps life as pumps should last many years under proper working conditions. You need to be cautious to avoid potential overflowing in an event of power loss. Even more important is to install a float valve that will automatically shut off power from the pump when water levels get too low.

Step # 3

Once you have dug out the path, you need to lay down a layer of landscape fabric. Make sure to spread out your landscape rubber so that it goes well into the groves and smooth out wrinkles on your waterfall drop. Finally, you should cover the entire thing in a sheet of landscape fabric to help protect your expensive pond rubber. Pond line exposed to the sun can eventually start to crack. The top later of fabric liner covers the pump, vault and drain pipe to allow the water to flow in, but keep the dirt out.

Step # 4

Landscape rocks may be expensive both in upfront cost, transport, and installation. But with a bit of searching you can find rocks for free, such as an area where mountain has been blasted, construction site, etc. This is good news for the DIYer or even a professional who can then route those savings to purchase more quality products for other areas e.g. better quality pumps, lighting, filters, and accessories.

Step # 5

You can use premix cement or landscape foam around the edges of your waterfall. As the gaps and crevasses are filled, water flows on top of your ledges rather than flowing underneath it. This is an important step as it can make a huge difference in the overall flow. Don’t spray too much as the foam expands. You can cut excess later with a knife. Properly filling in gaps will help to ensure that the water is going where you want it to go.

Step # 6

Something you should definitely add is landscape lighting to give your waterfall a spa glow during the evenings when the sun is going down. You can also add plants – real, fake or a mix to add more color and give the feature a more natural look. Pretty soon your pondless waterfall will become a miniature oasis that will have its own ecosystem. (And yes, if you have a pondless waterfall with natural rock instead of artificial rock the maintenance requirements will be very high).

Once you have done all the hard work, it is time to enjoy the waterfall. You can invite your friends for an intimate party at the waterfall or you can simply unwind after a hard day of work.

Garden Waterfalls Year Round

Waterfalls are a great addition to any garden. Water features come in a variety of styles. The most common method for their creation is by stacking natural rocks or boulders down a small stream or with a spillway kit. These are beautiful and can look like they belong in nature however we’ve found that most owners of these types of waterfalls often don’t maintain them.

WaterfallNow has an easier solution to this problem. We build a faux rock that has realistic rock shapes to maximize vertical height. The rock is all one large piece so cleaning it only requires a brush and hose to spray off any dirt. However, most people will find that the rocks look better over-time as the natural moss or earth colors mix into the rock’s surface. If you decide you want to go with a different color for the next season you can simply paint over the surface of the rock.

Lighting is another important feature to add to your garden during the fall/winter months especially as the days are shorter. The lighting from the LED lights that we use for our waterfalls and water features look great at night and especially in the winter as they make the icicles glow. The pond pumps can be left in as long as the water is kept running. Fortunately in Vancouver, the weather rarely gets so cold that the pond would freeze over. If you live in a colder climate it is best to remove the pump from the hose, rinse it out, drain it, dry it, and store it in a dry place. If it is not stored properly you can expect it to rust and no longer function when you go to install it again in the Spring.

Extend The Life Of Your Pond Pump

Most submersible pumps will last half a year or more as long as the pump is not clogged up with debris. You want to ensure that the motor is never running with low or no water levels. That can cause the pump to burn out. Turning the pump on and off does increase the wear and tear on the pump. It is usually recommended to leave them on. The downside is that they will require more constant filling and consume more energy although very little. If you hear a gurgling sound it just means you need to add more water as the pump is sucking in air. If the pond has an autofiller it’s better to just leave the pump running all the time.

Landscape Ponds, Water Features, And Supplies

Water features, Pond Pumps, And Accessories

In the architecture of landscape as well as garden design, water features are items that range from; ponds fountains, pools, streams, cascades and waterfalls, and streams. Prior to the 18th century most water features were typically powered by gravity. With pond planning and construction comes a good number of accessories that can enhance the aesthetics as well as functionality of the pond. An affordable and well reviewed pond pump is made by Jebao. Jebao manufactures pumps in China for waterfalls, ponds, and fountains. They range from simple to more complex construction. These are powerful, and can cost a fraction of what other leading name brands will cost. Cost is typically an issue for the average homeowner who doesn’t want to spend thousands of dollars every few years to replace a brand name pump. It is a misconception that water features can increase property value.

In some cases, a large pond may scare some potential home buyers away as they do not want to deal with the costs to maintain the pond.

Don't let this happen to your pool or pond! There are many things that could go wrong with a pump including damage from freezing in the winter, poor filtration, pump drying out due to low water levels and so on. The lower cost pump will do the same job without the same risk in cost. We recommend spending the difference in cost savings on a higher quality pond contractor to properly construct and service the pond.

Pond liners

preformed pond liner Pond liners come in a variety of forms. You can find premade fiberglass/plastic pond liners from most landscape garden supply stores. These are easy to install. Simply dig a hole, put the pond liner in making sure it is level, and backfill it in. Of course there are more steps involved but you get the idea. Another form is an impermeable geomembrane (EPDM) that is used for retention of water in the lining of garden ponds; it even includes the lining of lakes and artificial streams in gardens and parks. These pond liners require protection from sharp objects such as stones, tree roots, or anything else that could penetrate the liner causing a leak. If you have a leak in a larger pond, god bless your soul in trying to find it. For added protection a pond contractor may install several layers of sand, concrete or even fiber-matting among other materials. Pond liners are always manufactured in rolls and you can buy them in custom sizes. There are a few places in Surrey, BC that we know of that sells pond liner at exceptional prices (at least good enough to not bother with the hassle of buying from Amazon). While pond liner strips may be seamed or even welded together during construction, it is better to use one uniform piece.  Additional flexible types of pond liners like PVC and EPDM are able to have their panels pre-fabricated in the factory to fit the design and shape of the pond.

Jebao JGP series pond pumps are available both as submersible and non-submersible pumps (inline). They are a quiet workhorse providing overload-protection devices. These are specifically designed for use in garden ponds, fountains, terraced fountains and indoor fountains. The large pre-filters are easy to disassemble without requiring any tools. Simply engage the pressure tabs to remove, clean the filters, and snap back into place. Keep in mind that the built-in foam filter is NOT a substitute for a legitimate biofilter. WaterfallNow carries pond filters that will help to reduce algae and introduce good bacteria into the pond to maintain a sustainable ecosystem. This means your fish are happy and free from diseases! There are also additional uv filters that wll reduce algae and eliminate harmful pathogens. Overall the benefits are reduced frequency of pump cleaning, optimum water flow, and a clean pond. We recommend Jebao pumps for small to large ponds, waterfalls, or water features. The built-in wear-resistant ceramic bearings allow for continuous and trouble-free use. Jebao has been able to exhibit the best kind of pumps needed for ponds. One of the larger parts costs involved in pond construction is the pump. It is vital to buy the right kind of pond pump for an optimal flow rate. Want to add vertical elements such as a waterfall to the pond? We strongly suggest you give Jebao pumps a try and compare its performance with other brands. Note: Waterfalls are a great addition to ponds as they will add oxygen to the water which reduces the growth of algae and keeps fish happy. Don’t want a pond but want a water feature?  Why not add a pondless waterfall? You can enjoy the soothing sounds of a natural waterfall that is simple to maintain. Submersible and External Pond Pumps

  1. Submersible pumps are ‘submerged’ in the water of the pond itself.
  2. External pumps sit outside the pond. Pipes will connect the pump and the pond together.
  3. There are also other new models which can be used both externally and submerged.

Submersible pump pros or advantages

  • Simple to setup – Just connect the hoses/wiring and drop the pump in the water in the desired location.
  • Very quiet, cheap with a very high water turn rate. Available in almost all needed GPH gallon per hour. Add a valve as needed.
  • Suitable for all pond sizes.

Submersible Pumps cons or disadvantages

  • Clogs easily as do most pumps when a filter is not installed and must be cleaned regularly from debris.
  • Maintaining the pump is a somewhat tough task to do. Cheaper case construction but this does not affect performance.

External Pumps pros or advantages

  • These pumps are outside the pond, this means dry hands installation as well as maintenance.
  • Better for use in larger ponds.
  • Energy efficient

External Pumps cons or disadvantages

  • Relatively expensive to purchase, but has a lower power usage which makes up for the investment costs soon after buying.
  • Relatively harder to install there’s also the, fittings, piping and the pump also needs protection from direct rain.
  • The pump has to be hidden from the “landscape” and in the meantime it should be kept accessible for maintenance purposes.

Most people normally prefer submersible Jebao pond pumps as they are easy to install, reliable and fit well in smaller ponds.

Pond filters

Pond filters are essential for maintaining a clean, and healthy pond. One can choose from our wide range of selection of filters that are for sure of great qualities which suit the issues of ponds and water garden without depending on whether one has a small ornamental pond or an idyllic ram bling waterfall. WaterfallNow has biofilters and uv clarifiers available for customers pond projects.

How To Winterize A Pond: Pondless Waterfall, Water Feature, Or Fountain

How To Winterize A Pond: Pondless Waterfall, Water Feature, Or Fountain

winter fountain

Whether you have a pondless waterfall, koi pond, or outdoor fountain, there are a few important steps to take to winterize any water features that you may have in your backyard.

One step to take is to ensure that the pond area is free from debris such as fallen leaves, branches, or dead plants. The presence of these is often the largest contributor to maintenance requirements. Proper placement of a water feature away from potential debris can lead to a maintenance-free waterfall. In other cases, more notably in the fall months, such organic materials will deteriorate in the pond. This lowers the quality of water which can in turn decrease the lifespan of the pond pump. It is recommended to cover the pond water supply using a net or trimming nearby branches.

Much like a pool, it is essential to keep the pond free basin free of decomposed organic sludge. If draining of the pond followed by a sweep is not possible, it is recommended to use a pond vacuum. One should not over clean because the fish, frogs, tadpoles, and other organisms will often use the organic sludge at the bottom of the pond to nest in.

Another concern if you have fish is that the levels of ammonia, hydrogen sulfite, and nitrates will be increased as a result of the debris. Hydrogen sulfide in particular is poisonous to fish. Also, because fish require oxygen to survive, it is recommended that an open hole is maintained to allow oxygen in and to let carbon dioxide out. If you find that the water has frozen over, it is recommended to open the hole using boiling water as banging on the ice can irritate the fish.

Proper pump care for a pondless waterfall is necessary in harsh climates that are well below freezing temperatures during the winter months. It is recommended that you disconnect the pump, drain, and store in a dry place. It is also recommended that the waterfall be drained and covered to protect the internal hose/plumbing systems. If you have fish, it is recommended to try and leave some form of aeration system on for the pond to provide a fresh supply of oxygen to the pond. If the weather is too cold then a regular aquarium air pump will do in a pinch (even if the water is freezing). Floating pond heaters are available in stores and serve the purpose of keeping the pond surface from freezing over.

frozen fish pond

Pond owners will find that the deeper and larger the pond, the less maintenance is required in the long-run as a natural ecosystem builds up over-time. Smaller ponds that are shallow tend to require more careful attention. this is especially true in the winter as they can freeze over killing the fish inside. Fish often stay near the deepest areas of a pond during the winter months.

WaterfallNow’s waterfalls on the other hand can run year-round as Vancouver’s temperature is not as harsh. Because water rarely freezes in the Lower Mainland, BC, we are able to operate almost all of our waterfalls in any season without any issues. The fiberglass kevlar backed membrane can withstand even harsh freezing temperatures without fear of cracking that could cause significant damage to the structure or worse – leaks.

Featuring award winning pond waterfall and water garden designs by landscaping companies around the world

Thinking of renovating your yard this summer? WaterfallNow can bring any backyard water feature idea to life no matter what you have in mind. Here are some ideas for garden landscaping renovation projects using natural stone or concrete that home owners in Metro Vancouver have access to with contractors throughout the area.

This is a traditional style pondless water feature using the Aquascapes technology. It is a popular choice for many homeowners that are looking for a natural look and beautiful sound. It is also a popular choice for those wanting a Koi pond. Overall I would say that this is the most popular and recommended design. You can add a fountain, custom waterfall and even change the look simply by adding or rearranging the stones. Maintenance is only a hassle if you don’t have the budget to hire an experienced professional. If you like this design, call WaterfallNow and we will draw something up for you.

Here is one of my favourite videos from The Pond Digger a CAC with Aquascapes.

It is a rewarding feeling to have the skills and experience to do any project right the first time. Of course it will require many years of experience and the ability to properly quote a project before this can be achieved. When you consider how many variables there are when offering full-service landscaping it is no wonder most businesses struggle in their beginning stages. I personally believe that specializing in one thing and doing it better than anyone else is the best decision you can make from a business building perspective.

A cool contemporary design created with concrete rock (GFRC). A great idea for a koi pond. You can see the pond is properly constructed as it is not so small that it can’t sustain itself. Larger ponds require less maintenance because they develop a natural balanced ecosystem within.
WaterfallNowSomewhat hard to see but this is a small project made in the front yard of a home in Surrey. As you may know, WaterfallNow often uses an artificial rock compound panel that is very durable and looks like the real thing. This is used when the client wants a large rock that looks like one large piece. It is difficult or even impossible even using modern machinery to create something similar so we build it from scratch, piece by piece. LED lighting is just an additional tool that can be used to create a certain effect.

Faux rock panels are what make larger resort-style waterfalls and water features possible. WaterfallNow has made a countless number of smaller projects using this method and has the ability to create larger ones as well depending on the clients budget. We can work out a design that suits your needs for larger projects in any height, width, or design. The colour and lighting add-ons can also closely match whatever you have in mind.
Book your complimentary design consultation with a landscaping contractor in Vancouver or your local market today and start brainstorming some ideas. While word of mouth is great for the contractor, you as the home-owner should get at least 3 different quotes from different contractors to get the best value, service, ideas, and designs. The garden is after all your private sanctuary so you want to get it made right the first time.

Pondless Waterfalls: Artificial Rock Features

Pondless waterfalls

These are a fascinating addition to most yards that address the problems with pond waterfalls. Not everyone has the natural landscape and slopes to work with in creating a regular waterfall. Pondless waterfalls on the other hand can be built anywhere. Moreover, the lack of a pond means less maintenance. Less to clean, no requirements to leave it running all the time, safe for children, and more uptime. Premade pond kits are available at most stores. Alternatively you can do a local search for waterfalls, water features or landscaping companies.

When constructing a pondless waterfall the two major things to consider are the size of the water reservoir and the dimensions of the cascading waterfall. Once those two things are determined the rest is history. A method WaterfallNow recommends for getting ideas is to do a search online. WaterfallNow is in the process of creating ready to order waterfalls for the garden. Those that have a project requiring on-site custom work can request much larger features.

How Do Pondless Waterfalls Work?

Pondless waterfalls require water but not the traditional pond. By now most people know how the evaporation process works in nature. A pondless waterfall works in a similar way. One way to picture the process is to imagine a giant hose that sucks water up from the earth up to the rain clouds which  sends rain back to the earth and gets sucked up again – repeat. The same water that comes down the waterfall and into the water reservoir gets sent back up to the top of the waterfall through a hose which then sends the water back down.

Pondless Waterfall

WaterfallNow’s rocks are hollow making them portable. First the hole is dug, second the pond liners (EPDM) are added, and third the rock and plumbing are installed. Additional steps depend on the level of customization depending on the lighting or plants used.  Most of the work is in the preparation of our rocks.

Pondless Waterfall Artificial RockJust add plants

The Benefits Of WaterfallNow’s Pondless Waterfalls Include:

  • Attractive year after year: Only light cleaning to the water reservoir is needed once every few months.
  • Less that can go wrong: If there is a problem with one of the parts repairs or replacements are within reach.
  • Not a permanent feature: Can relocate, take down, move, sell, use as a cover, or be upgraded to something larger.
  • The beauty of a large water feature in even a small space: Scalable both vertically and horizontally.
  • Not prone to freeze-thaw action or hidden leaks within the rock.
  • No forming prep-work.
  • Safe for small children: No fear of drowning in a pond.
  • Less green bacterial mess: Higher upfront cost than other applications without the ongoing maintenance fees.
  • Only need to turn on when in use: Cost on average $3-6 per month when used a few hours per day.

Many landscape designers use natural rocks to create cascading streams. This is the method that most people are familiar with and one that WaterfallNow no longer employs. In this situation it is most common for the landscape artist to work with the land as opposed to against the land. In some cases they re-create the land itself by adding large boulders or more dirt. This is done to achieve the desired height (dimensions) for the water feature. The benefit of pondless waterfalls for those that simply want a nice sized realistic miniature waterfall in their yard is that the land does not dictate what you can or cannot have.

Making The Pond

As always, contact BC ONE CALL before you dig to avoid hitting any plumbing).

WaterfallNow creates the water reservoir for indoor applications as well as for outdoor applications. All that is required is very light digging. WaterfallNow’s pondless waterfalls usually go only 3 feet deep for the larger projects and less for smaller ones.

Creating the pond sounds easy and often gets overlooked. Doing it right plays a role in ensuring that the water level will not decrease on a daily basis. This means you don’t have to constantly fill the pondless waterfall with more water on a daily basis. As long as the water that goes up falls back onto the pond liner and into the water reservoir you won’t risk damaging the water pump. Water pumps last many years when properly maintained. A water pump that is not fully submerged in the water will not operate as long as it could due to the damage caused on the motor.

Dig the hole, remove sharp objects and rocks, lay down a few layers of pre-liner (carpet/tarp) and the pond liner (EPDM) on top. These are the essentials.

Pondless Waterfall Pond Liner

Making The Artificial Rock Features

WaterfallNow employs a fibreglass/natural stone combination to create rock faces that look like the ones found in nature. These pieces are assembled either on location for custom work or premade (ready to ship). There is relatively low demand for artificial rock made using fibreglass as the majority of the population is unaware that such a thing exists. Most people are however familiar with styrofoam which isn’t as durable or concrete which is prone to cracking.

Hiring Water Features Contractors For Your Garden Renovation

Water features for the garden are a staple for outdoor living.

As the weather grows warmer more people begin to shift their attention towards how they will redesign their yards. Considering the average person will spend a significant portion of their time it just makes sense to spruce things up.

There is a large variety of choices to be made when considering the type of garden renovation ideas one has in mind. Having many decades of landscaping experience under our belts we’ve heard the common issues most people had with their own yards. Most people want their yards to look nice but many don’t even know where to begin. Some believe they want a large amount of flowers only to find that they don’t have the time to maintain it themselves.

When most people look to add a water feature to their yard it is usually because they saw something online or they were in their friends yard and their neighbour had one. So what most people end up doing is going with the first company that they can find. I recommend getting a minimum of 3 estimates from different companies or contractors to get a better understanding of what the project will look like.

When choosing a contractor pick one that has a portfolio of past projects that you like. It is not enough to take one’s word for it and assume that they will create exactly what you had in mind. When in doubt ask for references.

How much does it cost? That will depend on the company you hire to do the work. Generally they will ask for a smaller deposit to begin the work. If a contractor asks for 50% of the total cost up front it should raise some alarms. Most companies work out smaller payments as the work progresses. There are times, especially with smaller companies just starting out, where the contractors ask for 50% upfront to fund an existing project that isn’t yet completed due to lack of funds.

It is safest for you as the customer to deal with contractors that only require small payments as the work progresses. Doing business simply because you like someone even if you know they might not do a good job or are inexperienced always comes with a risk. Things don’t always go as planned as is apparent in the world of contract work but there are precautionary steps you can take to avoid these setbacks. Such costs may entail having to re-hire someone else to fix the ‘fix.’

On the other hand, if you are a contractor reading this you must develop the ability to say ‘no’ to clients who will only cause more problems. It is not worth the headache and heart ache to deal with bad clients.

In summary:

1. Check the contractors portfolio. Ideally you want photos of projects they’ve done themselves. If they are in the custom crafting arena then bring your imagination to the table and plan things out beforehand.

2. Get multiple estimates before picking the water features contractor you plan to work with. Don’t overpay for something that anyone can do (eg. installing a DIY water feature from natural stones). The costs for things that cost less upfront often cost more in the long-run. Have in mind the type of water feature you want with the right budget in mind. Avoid attempts to haggle with something that is clearly out of your budget range in hopes of getting a deal. It’s not worth it.

3. Ask lots of questions. One of the ‘catches’ with most water features is that they lose their appeal after 1-2 years. The high maintenance costs of hiring someone to restore the pond and rocks from looking like green pea soup can be costly and time consuming over a long period of time. If you are a fan of maintenance free (hands off, minds off) and just want to relax then seek out low-maintenance options. Ideally you want something that suffers no cracking from ice (freeze-thaw), has no permit requirements, no excessive weight that may cause sinking and cracking, nothing that takes up too much of your yards real estate, nothing potentially dangerous for children, and something that lasts a lifetime.

4. While I recommend negotiating to get the best price try to avoid excessive haggling (see point 2) with contractors because it is a waste of your time and a waste of theirs. You will not get the best quality from asking for too much and giving too little. Often times trying to get things for cheap results in poor quality and a lower level of service. Water features, fountains, and waterfalls don’t come cheap but that is the point. The cheap variety can be found from Home Depot or Rona in a do-it-yourself kit. Doing it yourself is something that I recommend everyone try at least once. Why? Because it will yield a greater appreciation for the many years of experience that landscapers put in to the point where they make it ‘look easy.’

The bottom line for anyone seeking to renovate their yard is to pick something that gets a ‘wow’ out of themselves, their guests, and makes them feel good. WaterfallNow’s waterfalls are custom designed with you in mind so that you know you have a one of a kind custom hand-made piece of art. Go ahead, show off your yard.
